Textiles
My work is mostly felt with hand-sewing on it;sometimes I use other textiles, or paper. It is generally based on historical or ethnic sources from museums, and the ravages of time,in rust, rips, rends,or rot. What I'm best at is the ideas, research, and experiments. I love my big fat disorderly sketchbooks of multimedia thought processes. There's so much I need to look at and question that the books won't shut properly, and the projects are never finished. I then translate these ideas into textiles, mostly hand-made and stitched felt, though I admit that I probably value the resource books more highly than the finished pieces. The books are the divergent thought processes of a Gemini grasshopper. My latest project was inspired by the 'boro' textiles of old work clothes from Japan, which were patched, darned, deconstructed, and reconstructed. This leads naturally into the next project of rusty surfaces, and plant-dyed textiles, exposed to the effects of time and the elements.
