Inspired by the Pennine landscape, the work explores the relationship we have with the natural world, and investigates ways of nurturing that connection, a search for a healing process through keeping in touch with the green. I question our culture of instant gratification our insatiable need for more and the pace at which we are consuming the world’s resources. Once upon a time, we lived in balance with the natural world and we understood the world around us. I use natural materials, especially natural woollen fleece, incorporating found objects and second-hand materials. I use materials that are associated with the place from which my inspiration is derived with traditional craft techniques; these are skills that have been handed down from mother to daughter, I like the feeling of continuity. The making involves a slowing taking time to observe, to walk and work in the countryside, a meditation. Although fragile the things I find when out walking have a capacity to renew themselves, they flower, set seed, wither and die, feeding the earth for the next generation. They are eternal. The fragility is a reminder of the threat to their existence and therefore ours.
