I make my sculpture primarily from junk metal, welding it together with new metal, transforming it, giving it a new life and sometimes a touch of humour. The interesting shapes are quite often the starting point for a piece of work and will dictate what the piece will become; garden shears become bird’s beaks, a helmet becomes a tortoise shell. I find the junk metal in scrap-yards, skips, market stalls and at auctions but more often it finds me, people know what I do and will leave me their old junk metal outside my house or studio. I make sculpture for indoors and outdoors. I work on private commissions as well as large public art pieces, exhibit in galleries and work in schools. It’s rewarding working with children, explaining what I do as an artist, showing them my work and then helping them to create something of their own. I’ve used materials such as junk card-board, wire, plaster-bandage, cement fondue, fruit and vegetables and even welded metal when I’ve worked with children in over a hundred schools.
