Jewellery and Sculpture
Liz Danby Glass Artist I produce kiln fired and slumped semi-sculptural but also utilitarian glass objects for domestic interiors. I have long been interested in Japanese aesthetics particularly regarding the relationship we have with our utensils and their ability to affect our mood. Form can follow function as a theme expressed through touch that flows with in my work. I want people to interact and participate with my products to bring out the beauty and tactility within each individual piece. I use glass which is a hard material but which can have the illusion of softness and malleability. My aim is to produce pieces with both textural and visual appeal. I want people to interact with my work and be drawn in to touching and handling it. In this way I am hoping to provoke an emotional response from the observer. The tactile affiliation with shapes and textures with in the form should be enjoyed-especially as more and more of our utilitarian possessions are mass produced. Through glass objects which reflect and manipulate light I hope to influence people’s moods especially during the dark season to bring tranquillity and pleasure into reach for all. My objects will change depending on the environment they are in or how individuals place them, or how they choose to use them. Glass is a challenging medium but once you are in control its like being given the secret key to perform alchemy creating beauty and form from this malleable material. The transparency of the material and its relationship with light holds intense fascination for me. This is coupled with the fact that glass is waterproof, transparent, found in most homes and used every day. The way light passes through glass, refracting and creating pockets of illumination and shadow has a magical transitory quality to it. These factors influence how I design and use the material. I teach kiln fusing glass courses for beginners, to introduce the basic techniques used to produce beautiful and original glass jewelry. I work out of a spacious studio in the foothills of the Pennines just two minutes from Mirfield train station. Located at the West Yorkshire Print Workshop, the studio is set in an attractive, historic churchyard with all amenities on hand, including disabled access and facilities.
