Over recent years I have developed a real fascination with wood.

I love the patterns and textures within it, its response to shaping, be it loudly with chainsaws and power tools, or quietly and intricately with hand tools. I love its tactile accessibility to all who experience it and the way it continues to move and change over time, the material itself working with the piece to influence its form.

To me the process of creating is as important as the final piece. I use locally sourced reclaimed wood which is rarely treated and therefore subject to movement, ensuring that each piece grows and is influenced by the individual characteristics of the wood from which it is carved. It is this movement and individuality that I believe lends a particular relevance to the depiction of human subject matter and has led to my exploration of particularly, the head and face. I have been particularly influenced by the contemplative nature of religious carvings and have exhibited pieces in places of worship, which may be experienced in that context and are yet accessible as objects of beauty in their own right.

Wood is not simply a medium in which to represent beauty, it imbues the piece with its own.
