Textiles

I have a love of colour combined with pattern and texture which I attribute to my paternal Welsh heritage. In an era of plain and less is more they both firmly stick to the rule: pattern goes with pattern, colour with colour. This business is evident in all my work; both in the mixed media collage books I begin each project with, through to the ways in which I use and layer fabrics. My starting points vary as projects evolve. I use a variety of textile techniques depending upon the project and the direction the overfilled sketch books have taken me. Often the art work is used within the textiles, through the printing and layering of materials to create the depth of colours that are evident in all aspects of my work. I am especially fond of working with felt. I find that it can be used in so many different ways, with other materials and fibres being put into the felt and also the felt applied on top of other fabrics. All my work has a variety of machine stitching; hand stitching and most of the pieces include beading. It is the tactile, textural element of textile work which I fell in love with, alongside the satisfaction of having created something. The enthusiasm I have I pass onto children in the workshops that I have run. Hopefully, within the next year, I will have been able to develop the studio space along with the rest of the TRIO group to hold workshops for children and adults alike.
