I know that this work begins with the feel of weather, atmosphere, the effects of light and colour on the mood of landscape and on the marks of the land. I know the paintings are created, somehow, when the memory of senses and experience of an actual place or set of physical and atmospheric conditions, combine with the emotion, physicality and memory of mark making in the painting process. I believe that this process is intuitive, not intellectual and therefore I know that there is lots that I do not know not know - and that's good. The photographs stem from similar concerns although the process is different. I have always loved taking photographs but wonder how this relates to the paintings and in this work I am definitely not looking for a purely photographic finish. I am experimenting with a much more technical process in an attempt to create a much more painterly photograph. The paintings and the photographs, although very different in process, grow closer together in terms of the visual product, whilst each also retains something that is unobtainable in the other.
