Alison Edmonds was brought up in Manchester but now works from a studio space at Bates Mill, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire where she produces drawings, paintings, 3d and installation work. Major themes often emerge from apparently small beginnings which could be memories and perceptions, found objects such as wording from a sign outside a building but then progress and expand to more universal considerations such as the physical and spiritual journey we make from Point A to Point B. A never-ending series of heads are protective masks which help us make this journey. Shadows are there but not there and a series of Mysterious Black Spaces could become an Archipelago. There is often a strong structural, architectural or landscape presence in the work. The heads are sometimes Fortresses. Walls, Towers and Angles of Trajectory have echoes of geometry and draughtsman drawings. Colours and shapes are inspired by industrial or decaying areas of Manchester which formed some of the background cityscape of the Artists Youth . Working at Bates Mill provides a similar background although after spending time in London the Pennine landscape of West Yorkshire has also assimilated itself into the phsyche. The brooding presence of hill forms and strong horizon lines are punctuated by structures, or are they rock formations or voids. The Art of Alison Edmonds asks more questions than it provides answers.
