Working in wood or stone, I carve female figures producing forms of universal reference. I am interested in figurative sculpture across time, place and culture and have worked under Dudzai Mushawepwere and Matthew Nakhawale from Zimbabwe. Seeing collections of Pre Colombian Art in Peru changed my perspective on representing the human figure and I also draw inspiration from the British Museum and Sainsbury Collections. My focus on female forms is subjective, as I attempt to explore and portray the realities of inhabiting a woman’s body. Recent work has included life size figures in wire and in plastic for the Art in the Woods Sculpture Trail as part of Holmfirth Arts Festival 2009 and 2011 and participation with Jamie Frost in The Art Market June 2011. As well as having a studio at WYPW, I work with AIM artists as a mentor and workshop leader.
