Through a playful exploration of materials more familiar to us in everyday dress and sportswear, such as hosiery, shock-cord elastic and synthetic hair, 'Maria Lau' creates refined manipulations of these soft materials by combining simple handcraft techniques with semi-precious stones to push the boundaries of high-end fashion jewellery. The resulting experience is a harmony between casual and luxury, in which the wearer is also invited to play and interact with elements such as hair-like fringing and subtle magnets.
For Maria Lau each collection embodies elements from a central character or story such as legendary heroines, tribal warriors or an imaginary film conjured up in her mind - which are then brought alive through her photoshoots and collaborations with photographers, models and make-up artists.
