Working from my studio at home I produce one–off ceramic work for exhibitions and galleries. My work has developed from sculptural vessel forms to individual ‘Clay Paintings’, where the focus has changed from form to surface. This has enabled me to explore an ongoing interest in mark making and texture, drawing inspiration from the natural and manmade landscape. Bands of colour, contour lines, dashes, marks and strips of glaze play upon the surface of my recent work. I work directly onto the clay, building up the surface in multiple layers, drawing, printing and marking the clay between the layers and firings to create a richness and depth that is unique to each piece. Since completing an MA in Ceramics at the Royal College of Art I have taught across the UK to adults, degree students and currently primary school children. It is working with young children that has enabled me to re-discover the tactile and expressive nature of clay and the enthusiasm and confidence of children to simply dive in and try something new never fails to inspire me.
