Born in 1939 and educated in the USA (Missouri, Iowa and Michigan). Moved to Yorkshire, England in 1972, established the Booth House Gallery and Ceramics Studio in 1975.
Work is usually Slab Built and slip decorated, including large scale sculpture and architectural ceramics. Jim enjoys an experimental approach to making, often combining personal construction techniques with unusual surface textures, multiple layers of clay and colourful glazes. All pieces are reduction fired in a gas kiln.
An enthusiast who both makes and promotes ceramics through his own Booth House Gallery; he is an elected Fellow of the British Craft Potters Association, and has been a Council Member for that organisation, Former Chair of the Northern Potters Association and since 1993 Master of Ceremonies at the Aberystwyth International Festival in Wales. Head of Ceramics at Leeds University College (Bretton Hall 1974 until 2001) and author of the book, Large Scale Ceramics, published in 1997 (reprinted in 2005). Public Commissions include the Murals and Sculptures in Yorkshire, (Holmfirth Civic Hall and Victoria Square), Cambridge (1985), and Liverpool.
He is often asked to speak and demonstrate to art and ceramics groups throughout the UK, and abroad. (British Columbia and Ireland in 2008) With help of his English wife, Liz, week long residential courses are offered in Glazing, Making and Extrusion Techniques.
